TORONTO – A funeral service was held Monday for 26-year-old Ariela Navarro-Fenoy who was shot and killed as gunfire erupted during the OVO Fest after-party at the Muzik nightclub in Toronto last week.

Close to 350 family and friends packed the St. Judes Roman Catholic Church in North York for the private service.

“She was a free spirit who lived life to the fullest. She was herself at all times and was able to connect with anyone she met,” said Navarro-Fenoy’s sister Aluen in an emotional statement read to the media following the funeral.

“My sister was tragically taken away from us too soon and today we put her to rest. We’re sure our angel is looking after us.”

The shooting, which also claimed the life of 23-year-old Duvel Hibbert, took place in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Aug. 4 following the end of the OVO Fest after-party hosted by Toronto rapper Drake.

Navarro-Fenoy was wounded just outside of the venue north of the Dufferin Gates. She later died in hospital from her injuries.

The victim’s father thanked the public for the outpouring of support but was visibly burdened by the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death.

“I have so many questions. I need answers right now,” said Victor Navarro, holding back tears.

A friend of Navarro-Fenoy said they were both caught out in the open after several taxis refused to accept their fare because it was too small.

Franca Abate said she and Navarro-Fenoy then headed towards a friend’s car when they encountered a group of men arguing and a round of gunfire erupted.

Navarro-Fenoy was fatally shot as they both tried to escape the chaos.

There have been no arrests in the case and police are still looking to identify two persons of interest.

Since her death, an online fundraising campaign has raised over $25,000 for her funeral costs.
